2016 Design Trends To Leave Behind

Posted by BedfordBrooks in Design Tips on Jan 9th, 2017

Some design trends come and go quickly, leaving your space unoriginal and even dated. With that in mind, here are several popular 2016 design trends to leave behind.

Outdated 2016 Design Trends

  • Vessel Sinks

Vessel sinks, sinks that are bowl-shaped, have been talked about for quite some time, even before 2016. However, they are one trend that you should leave behind now that they can be found everywhere.

  • Copper Finishes

When it comes to design trends, copper finishes are officially dated now that they can be found everywhere – chain homeware stores included. Metallic finishes will now be the new finish to embrace in the upcoming year. Gold and silver are great options and also have the benefit of working well together.

  • Grandmotherly Floral Prints

Retro, grandmotherly floral prints became very popular this year. However, the nature of very retro trends means that they experience a sharp rise followed by a sharp decline, which is exactly what has happened with these prints. If you want to avoid your home being dated, do away with grandmotherly floral prints. If you particularly enjoy florals, opt for a floral piece of artwork instead. The benefit of such a piece is that it will not become less trendy over time, meaning you can feel comfortable investing in it.

  • Marble

You may be surprised to see marble on this list. While we don’t suggest that you need to do away with marble completely, keep in mind that it is being overused and that therefore it is important to keep it to a minimum. Resign your use of marble to kitchen counters or a single side table in your home. The reason for this is also that marble can lack warmth. As an alternative to marble, you could also try mixing various textures in your home, like terracotta and reclaimed timber.

  • Home Decor: Cushions With Inspirational Quotes + Cross And Skull Decorations

In the home decor category, the following items have officially been deemed out of style: pillows with inspirational quotes, along with crosses and skulls that you might display over a fireplace. Instead of crosses and skulls, another option is to hang an oversized engraved key on your wall instead. Unlike crosses and skulls, engraved keys haven’t been overused and therefore make a fresh decor option for your home. As far as cushions are concerned, high-quality cushions that have been hand done, whether painted or sewed, will be particularly trendy in the new year.
